Recently someone on my Insta account asked me how do I wear something bold like a pop color or animal prints to office, so I thought why not write about it.
There was a time, when animal prints were only associated with seedy lounges or a starlet sashaying in a Bollywood item song. But in the few years, animal print has really moved on to a whole new level. You can find them everywhere, shoes, clothes, bags.. You name it. Sometime back I read somewhere, “Leopard is the new neutral.” …But, It’s one thing to rock these prints while you are chatting over cocktails or lounging with your besties, but can you pull it off in the office?
I was recently reading an article, which mentioned a lot of women in Goldman Sachs have embraced animal prints in their work wear. My instant thought was.. wow so that makes it wall-street approved as well. I shamelessly admit that animals have a special place in my life as well as in my wardrobe, from a silk shirt, to a shift dress to a pair of stilettos. A perfect attire for a day at the workstation and lunch with a friend.
However I do stick to a set of rules while wearing these prints.
Small doses: Less is always more when wearing animal print to office .Go for animal as an accent shade, especially if you work in a conservative environment.
Keep it classic: The key to wearing animal print is all in the silhouette. A leopard pencil skirt can be elegant and classic. But a clingy bodycon dress will certainly look inappropriate and trashy.
Don’t overindulge the animals: Keep your flamingoes, snakes and leopards separate, wearing only one animal print at a time.
Combine your animal print with a solid color – This is a cardinal rule, which I always follow. Tucking in a crisp white button-down or pairing a fitted blazer always mutes the effect of the animal prints and keeps it at the right level. My favorite combo is beige, black or mint with a splash of “roar” or a tinge of ‘slither’
There is a fine line between classic and tacky and there is a skill to finding the balance. The decision when to wear an animal print depends on where you are going and whom you are meeting. However, no matter what you do , dress it up or down, the animal is bound to attract some stares.. be prepared for that 🙂
